When we think of inheritance,we think of acquiring and owning the property from our parents or loved ones. You can only inherit what your parents or loved ones owned and put you as the successor. But if your parents didn’t own anything,it means you have to work hard and acquire some property which your children will inherit.
The Lord values people who work hard to leave an inheritance for their children.
‘’A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, But the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.’’
The Lord actually calls such people,”good”.So you become a good man/woman if you leave an inheritance, some property or wealth for your children and grandchildren.I would want to be called good, what about you?
Yet this week as we read Numbers 18,the Lord tells Aaron that he should NOT acquire any property by inheriting from his people.
‘’Then the LORD said to Aaron: “You shall have no inheritance in their land, nor shall you have any portion among them; I am your portion and your inheritance among the children of Israel.’’
The Levites were not supposed to till the land in order for them to eat, neither were they to inherit property. What they ate would depend on the offerings made by the Israelites.
Their inheritance would come from the Israelites offerings.
”For the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer up as a heave offering to the LORD, I have given to the Levites as an inheritance; therefore I have said to them, ‘Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.’”
In regard to this, let us be faithful in giving our tithes so that our pastors may not lack.
When Jesus Christ came,things changed.
”All who received and believed in him were given power to become the children of God.” John 1:12
Isn’t it interesting that as children of God we now have a right to inherit what belongs to our father?Whatever Jesus Christ has inherited,we also can have a part or portion in it.The Apostle Paul said,
‘’The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.’’
Jesus Christ will be glorified one day,we will share in his glory if we persevere the persecution we face while on earth.
Peter also had a special way of describing God’s children,he calls us holy and royal priests.
‘’But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;’’
As believers,what is our inheritance?
What is our portion?
We have been called to rejoice in what Jesus celebrated and to suffer what he suffered. We are to acquire a holy character, and to enjoy all the benefits of salvation, namely;joy, peace, abundance of wealth and health and many more.
Nevertheless,we should not be obsessed with our earthly possessions, because they will all be destroyed one day.We should consider storing our properties in the Lord,e.g through serving,or giving to the needy.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’’
If you invest in the Lord’s work,it shows that your heart is there.Hence showing how much you love the Lord.
How do you store your treasure in heaven?
We can help and support the poor people. The Bible says if you help a poor person, you have actually lent the Lord.Hence, the Lord will return to you.
We can also use our talents to serve him.Do you have a talent, please start using it so that it may grow.
Do you know of other ways we have inheritance as children of God?I will be glad to hear from you.Consider sharing your thoughts in the comments below.
